Sarpaneva has long been one of Finnish design's most prominent
figures worldwide. In addition to timeless, stylistically-
subdued utility glass, he is also known for his impressive and
ambitious unique works. Sarpaneva was a master of many fields
and a materials expert: his output extends from utility and art glass
to stainless steel, textiles and graphics. Timo Sarpaneva is
one of the representative industrial designers and sculptors of
Finland. Recipient of many honors including Honorary membership of
ORNAMO, the Finnish Association of Designers; Academico de Honor
Extranjero, Academia di Diseno, University of Mexico City; Honorary
Doctor of University of Art and Design, Helsinki; Honorary Doctor of
Royal College of Arts, London; the Order of the Finnish Lion. Numerous
international awards he has won include the Grands Prix of art glass
collection and exhibition archi- tecture of the Triennale di Milano;
Eurostar in Vienna, the Ambiente gift wrapping and production method
award of the European Packaging Federation; and the Suomi Award,
