Arabia "Blues" The
designer of this Arabia service "Blues" is
renowned Heikki Orvola (1943-), one of the current movers and shakers
of Finnish design. He works with glass (iittala), ceramics (Arabia and
Rorstrand), cast iron, enamel and textiles (Marimekko). For
most of his career Orvola has worked for industry, but for him artworks
made of glass, ceramics and textiles are a necessary outlet for his
creative energies. A 15-year grant from the State, which he received
since the beginning of 1994, has increased his freedom to decide where
to apply his energies. The Victoria and Albert Museum, the Museum of
Modern Art, the Stedelijk Museum, the Finnish Glass Museum and the
Arabia Museum are only some of the museums that have included
Orvola works in their collections. During his career as an
industrial designer, Orvola has received e.g. the Kaj Franck prize
(1998), which is Finland's most important design award, and the Pro
Finlandia medal (1984), among numerous other awards. |
